Texas LTC Range Qualification

Once you complete your online Texas LTC course you will need to conduct part B which is known as the shooting qualification. You can use any local LTC instructor in your area to complete the shooting portion. You will receive access to an instructor locator to find an instructor in your area. The below items will assist you in having a stress-free and safe shooting experience.

What To Bring To The Range

  • Semi-automatic pistol or revolver (any caliber)
  • Enough pistol magazines to carry your ammunition, however, there is always time to reload your magazines if needed
  • 50 rounds of ammunition at a minimum especially if you want to practice first or need an additional chance to qualify
  • Eye protection (sunglasses or any kind of glasses will work)
  • Ear protection (ear plugs, earmuffs, or electronic ear protection is great)
  • Recommend no open toe shoes as expanded brass remains hot and brass on exposed skin may cause minor distress
  • Ball cap or hat with a bill recommended but not required
  • Shirts that are low cut around the neck are not recommended as expanded hot brass could find its way down your shirt and, again, may cause minor distress

We have free loaner guns for class if needed. Bring your own ammunition of 9mm or .45 if using our loaner guns as both 9mm and .45 are available for use.

Exempt From Shooting

The people below do not need the shooting portion and only need the online course.

  • Texas State Correctional Officers “COs” are automatically exempt from the shooting portion.
  • Active duty military or Veterans that have within the past 10 years completed training in the familiarization of firearms  OR have firearm shooting scores from the military. For Veterans, if a pistol qualification is not annotated on your DD 214 or if you cannot produce an official range qualification scorecard, you will be required to conduct the shooting as part B to any LTC Class. Trust me on this as I learned this the hard way.
  • County Jailers that have completed firearms training as part of their employment.
